It's important to note, however, that your homepage is different than your startup page. Your homepage is the site connected to the house icon in the top toolbar, but the startup page is what appears when you launch Chrome.

Here's how to change your homepage in Google Chrome, for both Mac and PC.

1. Open Google Chrome on your desktop.

2. From any webpage, click the three circles at the far-right side of the top toolbar.

3. Click 'Settings.'

4. This will bring you to your Chrome settings. Click on the 'Appearance' tab in the right sidebar.

5. The second option on this page will read 'Show home button' and have a switch. First, make sure this switch is turned on. If it's not, click the toggle to change it from gray to blue.

6. Once the feature is turned on, change the homepage from the default 'New Tab page' to a custom web address. Click the second circle and enter the website of your choice.

Your new homepage will be saved automatically.

The Home button will now be at the top of every Chrome window, to the left of the search bar. Clicking on this icon - it looks like the outline of a house - will bring you to the website you set as your homepage.

Users have claimed that there default search engine is changed to some website called ‘akamaihd.net‘, and they are unable to get rid of it. This issue was reported by users a few months ago and it still seems to be hanging around for some.

I don't have a solution . . . only writing to say I've got the same problem–I've used Chrome for yearsss, and this just happened today. It seems 'default290967113-a.akamaihd.net' has hijacked my google search engine. I tried two antivirus scans: malwarebytes and AGV; but neither did a thing. I also contacted Apple help and was on the phone with a tech person for 45 minutes, and they finally said, 'Reach out to Google.' If Google/Chrome is listening . . . I'm on to other options and only to return if it is fixed.

Notably, this issue has been covered by various publications and was termed as adware. But it hasn't been covered as a hindrance to changing the default search engine, which is from an end user's perspective.

Fortunately, there is a workaround available for this issue. According to a Google Chrome community member, you just need to remove malicious profiles from System Preferences.

Control click mac. This worked for me.
1. Go to System Preferences
2. Profiles
3. Remove the anonymous profile/s

And according to some users, the trick to remove suspicious profiles from the System preferences has indeed removed the culprit ‘akamaihd.net' search engine. Apple macbook pro disk utility.
